Damage
April 29th, 2008 Posted in Date palm damage, Nature & mechanism of damage, coconut palm damage
Almost the entire damage is caused by the larvae that feed on the inner tissues of host palm near the crown or some part of the trunk region. In coconut the damage is towards the upper portion of trunk but in date palm the damage is more at the base of the trunk. The external symptoms produced by the pest attack include the presence of small bore holes on the stem, oozing out of brown viscous liquid, spit out chewed tissue fibers and longitudinal splitting of leaf bases. Sometimes the trunk becomes hollow with severe damage to the inner tissues. In the final stages the crown gets toppled as a result of severance of crown from main stem.

I am a landscape gardener in the region of the northern Costa Blanca in Spain. As you are probably aware the disease is begining to infiltrate this region. My question is; are there any courses available so that I can learn more about the disease and its control preferably in this area and in English? If not I am willing to travel to where it is available. Thank you for your help

Probably there are a few courses conducted by the agencies entrusted with the control of Red Palm Weevil in each of the affected countries. In King Saud University as a part of the activity of our Research Chair, we conducted a two week training program for the agricultural engineers working in Agric Ministry of Saudi Arabia. I will write to European Commission to have a course in each of the countries for the benefit of all those people working in landscape especially Spain, Italy and Portugal. I will also discuss to have international course at our university as well in future.
